Getting a Dental Implant in Korea After Work: Cost, Pain, Insurance, and My Experience

This article is based on my personal dental treatment experience in Korea. Treatment plans, pain levels, recovery periods, and costs can vary depending on each patient’s dental condition, clinic, materials, insurance coverage, and location. This is not medical advice.

One evening, I noticed inflammation coming from my gum. Since I work from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., I searched for a dental clinic that was open after work. Luckily, there was a local dental clinic on my way home that stayed open until 8 p.m.

어느 날 잇몸에서 염증이 터져 나왔다. 무슨 일인가 싶었지만 평일 낮에 바로 치과를 가기는 어려웠다. 나는 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지 일하는 한국 직장인이기 때문이다. 마침 퇴근길에 오후 8시까지 진료하는 동네 치과가 있어, 6시에 퇴근하고 6시 30분쯤 도착해 진료를 받을 수 있었다.

Why Evening Dental Clinics Are Helpful in Korea

For Korean office workers, evening clinic hours are extremely helpful. Many people cannot easily leave work during the day, so clinics that stay open until 8 p.m. make dental care much more accessible.

한국 직장인에게 야간진료 치과는 정말 유용하다. 평일 낮에 반차를 내거나 외출하기 어려운 경우가 많기 때문에, 오후 8시까지 운영하는 치과는 퇴근 후 치료를 받을 수 있는 현실적인 선택지가 된다.

Appointments are also easy to make. In Korea, many dental clinics accept reservations by phone, mobile app, text message, or online booking. In my case, the process was simple and fast.

예약도 어렵지 않았다. 한국의 많은 치과는 전화, 앱, 문자, 온라인 예약 등을 통해 진료 예약을 받을 수 있다. 내 경우에도 예약과 접수 과정은 간단하고 빠른 편이었다.

First Visit: X-Ray, CT Scan, Consultation, and Scaling

During my first visit, the clinic took panoramic dental images, CT scans, and X-rays. The dentist showed the images on a large screen and explained the condition of my tooth and gum.

첫 번째 내원에서는 파노라마 촬영, CT, 엑스레이 촬영을 했다. 촬영한 사진을 큰 화면에 띄운 뒤, 의사와 함께 보며 치아와 잇몸 상태에 대한 설명을 들었다.

The dentist explained that inflammation had damaged the bone around the tooth. Because of this, I needed an extraction, a dental implant, and a bone graft.

의사는 염증 때문에 잇몸뼈가 녹아 있었고, 해당 치아는 발치 후 임플란트와 뼈이식이 필요하다고 설명했다.

There was one more issue. The tooth that needed an implant had previously been connected to the neighboring tooth with a crown. Because of that, the old connected crown had to be removed, and a new single zirconia crown would be placed on the adjacent tooth.

문제는 하나 더 있었다. 임플란트를 해야 할 치아가 옆 치아와 묶인 크라운으로 연결되어 있었다. 그래서 기존 크라운을 벗긴 뒤, 옆 치아에는 이빨 하나짜리 지르코니아 크라운을 새로 씌워야 했다.

After discussing the treatment plan, cost, and schedule, I also received scaling. In Korea, annual dental scaling is partially covered by the National Health Insurance system. I paid about KRW 10,000 for scaling.

치료 계획과 금액, 스케줄을 상담한 뒤에는 스케일링도 받았다. 한국에서는 매년 1회 스케일링이 국가건강보험 적용을 받을 수 있다. 나는 건강보험 적용 후 약 1만 원을 결제했다.

Without Korean National Health Insurance, dental scaling may cost around KRW 50,000, depending on the clinic.

국가건강보험이 적용되지 않는 외국인이나 비보험 환자의 경우, 병원에 따라 스케일링 비용은 약 5만 원 선일 수 있다.

My Dental Implant Treatment Schedule

Here is the treatment flow based on my personal case.

아래는 내 개인 치료 기준의 진행 흐름이다.

First Visit

• Reservation and registration

From anesthesia to suturing, the procedure took less than one hour in my case.

2차 내원

내 경우 마취부터 봉합까지 1시간 미만으로 끝났다.

Third Visit

Two weeks after surgery, I returned to remove the stitches, check the healing condition, and take an impression for the crown.

3차 내원

2차 내원 후 약 2주 뒤 실밥을 뽑고, 아무는 상태를 확인한 뒤 크라운 본을 떴다.

Fourth Visit

The zirconia crown was placed on the neighboring tooth.

4차 내원

옆 치아에 지르코니아 크라운을 삽입했다.

Fifth Visit

The implant crown process is scheduled to be completed in July.

5차 내원

임플란트 치아 본뜨기와 최종 보철 삽입은 7월에 마무리될 예정이다.

Pain During and After Dental Implant Surgery

Before the procedure, I used an anesthetic gargle and then received local anesthesia injections. I mainly felt a heavy pressure as the anesthesia spread, but I did not feel pain during the extraction, implant placement, or bone graft.

시술 전에는 마취가글을 하고 마취주사를 맞았다. 마취액이 퍼지는 뻐근함은 있었지만, 발치와 임플란트 식립, 뼈이식이 진행되는 동안 통증은 거의 느끼지 않았다.

However, the physical sensation of the drill and implant placement was uncomfortable. It was not painful, but it made me feel dizzy and tense.

다만 나사가 들어가는 드릴의 진동과 압박감은 불편했다. 아프다기보다는 어지럽고 긴장되는 느낌에 가까웠다.

After the surgery was finished and the dentist explained the post-treatment instructions, I slowly started to feel the anesthesia wearing off. In other words, the pain began.

시술이 끝나고 주의사항을 듣는 동안 마취가 서서히 풀리는 느낌이 들었다. 한마디로 아프기 시작했다는 뜻이다.

The clinic gave me soft porridge, a cold ice pack, and disinfectant mouthwash. I also received a prescription, went to the pharmacy, and took antibiotics and painkillers right away.

병원에서는 죽, 차가운 찜질팩, 소독용 가글을 챙겨주었다. 처방전을 받아 약국에 갔고, 항생제와 진통제를 바로 복용했다.

작은 한국 생활 꿀팁. 병원 진료 후 약국 보물찾기를 떠날 필요는 없다. 한국에서는 병원 근처 약국이 병원 진료 시간에 맞춰 늦게까지 운영하는 경우가 많다. 늦은 밤 문 연 약국을 찾아야 한다면, 한국의 긴급전화 119가 안내를 도와줄 수 있다.

During the 20-minute ride home, the pain came in gradually but quickly. For the next two weeks, I had discomfort almost every day.

집으로 가는 20분 동안 통증은 서서히, 하지만 빠르게 밀려왔다. 이후 약 2주 동안은 거의 매일 불편함과 통증이 있었다.

The most annoying part was the stitch. One of the threads felt too long and kept poking the inside of my cheek. I eventually visited another nearby dental clinic to have the stitch trimmed slightly.

특히 실밥이 너무 길어서 볼 안쪽을 계속 찌르는 것이 가장 괴로웠다. 결국 집 근처 치과에 가서 실밥을 약간 잘라야 했다.

I kept applying a cold ice pack, so swelling was not severe in my case. Honestly, avoiding alcohol and smoking felt harder than the pain itself.

차가운 얼음팩을 계속 대고 있어서 붓기는 심하지 않았다. 솔직히 말하면 통증보다 금주와 금연이 더 괴로웠다.

Post-Surgery Instructions I Received

The clinic gave me several instructions after implant surgery. These were the main points.

임플란트 수술 후 병원에서 안내받은 주의사항은 다음과 같았다.

• Bite on gauze for about two hours to stop bleeding.
• Do not spit out blood or saliva. Swallow it instead.
• Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks.
• Avoid intense exercise and hot food for at least one week.
• Brush carefully while avoiding the surgical area.
• Use the prescribed disinfectant mouthwash, such as Hexamedine, as instructed.
• 지혈을 위해 거즈를 약 2시간 동안 물고 있기
• 침이나 피는 뱉지 말고 삼키기
• 최소 2주 금주, 금연
• 최소 1주일 동안 무리한 운동과 뜨거운 음식 피하기
• 수술 부위를 피해 조심스럽게 칫솔질하기
• 처방받은 구강소독액, 예를 들어 헥사메딘 등을 안내에 따라 사용하기

Again, these were the instructions I personally received. Always follow your own dentist’s instructions after treatment.

다시 말하지만, 이것은 내가 병원에서 직접 안내받은 내용이다. 치료 후에는 반드시 본인 담당 치과의사의 지시를 따르는 것이 가장 중요하다.

Dental Implant Cost in Korea: My Case

The total cost in my case was KRW 1,880,000, which was approximately USD 1,280 at the exchange rate I used.

내 경우 총 치료비는 1,880,000원이었다. 내가 계산한 환율 기준으로는 약 1,280달러 정도다.

These costs are based only on my personal treatment. Dental prices can vary depending on the clinic, city, implant brand, crown material, bone condition, insurance, and each patient’s case.

아래 금액은 내 개인 치료 기준이다. 치과 비용은 병원, 지역, 임플란트 브랜드, 크라운 재료, 잇몸뼈 상태, 보험 여부, 개인의 치아 상태에 따라 달라질 수 있다.

Dental Insurance Claim in Korea

If you have private dental insurance in Korea, the clinic can usually prepare the necessary documents. In my case, I told the clinic which insurance company I used, and they prepared the documents for me.

한국에서 개인 치아보험에 가입되어 있다면, 치과에서 필요한 서류를 준비해주는 경우가 많다. 내 경우 어느 보험사의 상품인지 말하자 병원 측에서 필요한 서류를 챙겨주었다.

The claim process was also simple. I accessed the insurance company’s app or the URL sent by the insurer, took photos of the documents from the clinic, and uploaded them.

청구 과정도 어렵지 않았다. 보험사 앱이나 보험사에서 보내준 URL로 접속한 뒤, 병원에서 받은 서류를 사진으로 찍어 제출하면 됐다.

For my case, the insurance payout was about KRW 2,000,000, which is approximately USD 1,363. The actual amount depends on the insurance policy, coverage conditions, waiting periods, and required documents.

내 경우 보험사에서 최종 지급받은 금액은 약 200만 원, 달러로 약 1,363달러 정도였다. 실제 보험금은 가입한 보험 상품, 보장 조건, 면책 기간, 필요 서류에 따라 달라진다.

What I Liked About Korean Dental Service

What impressed me most was the speed and convenience. I could visit the clinic after work, receive imaging tests, hear the treatment plan, get a cost estimate, and schedule the next appointment in a short time.

가장 인상적이었던 점은 속도와 편리함이었다. 퇴근 후 방문했는데도 촬영, 상담, 견적, 다음 예약까지 빠르게 진행할 수 있었다.

The clinic also showed my dental images on a large screen and explained the problem visually. This made it easier to understand why extraction, bone grafting, implant placement, and a crown were needed.

큰 화면으로 내 치아 사진을 함께 보며 설명해준 점도 좋았다. 왜 발치와 뼈이식, 임플란트 식립, 크라운이 필요한지 시각적으로 이해할 수 있었다.

Another helpful part was the aftercare package. The clinic gave me porridge, an ice pack, disinfectant mouthwash, and written post-surgery instructions.

수술 후 죽, 찜질팩, 소독용 가글, 안내문을 챙겨준 것도 도움이 되었다. 치료가 끝난 뒤 바로 무엇을 해야 하는지 알 수 있어 불안이 조금 줄었다.

Things to Know Before Getting Dental Treatment in Korea

If you are planning dental treatment in Korea, these are the things I would personally check.

한국에서 치과 치료를 받을 예정이라면, 개인적으로는 아래 내용을 확인해보는 것이 좋다고 느꼈다.

• Clinic opening hours, especially evening hours
• Whether reservations can be made by phone, app, or text
• Whether panoramic X-ray and CT scans are available
• Implant brand and crown material
• Whether bone grafting is needed
• Total estimated cost
• Follow-up schedule
• Post-surgery care instructions

Final Thoughts

My implant treatment started in April with extraction, implant placement, and bone grafting. The final implant crown is scheduled to be completed in July.

내 임플란트 치료는 4월에 발치, 임플란트 식립, 뼈이식으로 시작되었고, 최종 임플란트 보철은 7월에 마무리될 예정이다.

The first two weeks of recovery were difficult. I do not want to go through it again. More than anything, this experience reminded me how important daily dental care is.

회복되는 2주는 꽤 괴로웠다. 두 번 다시 겪고 싶지 않다. 무엇보다 이번 일을 통해 매일의 치아 관리가 얼마나 중요한지 다시 느꼈다.

Brush well. Use dental floss. Use a water flosser if it helps. Gargle properly when needed. A few minutes of care every day may save you from a much more painful and expensive experience later.

이를 잘 닦자. 치실도 하자. 필요하면 워터픽도 쓰자. 가글도 제대로 하자. 매일 몇 분의 관리가 나중의 큰 통증과 큰 비용을 막아줄 수 있다.

For me, this was one of the most intense after-work experiences in Korea: leaving the office, visiting a local dental clinic, facing an implant surgery, and learning the hard way that dental health should never be postponed.

나에게 이것은 한국에서 겪은 가장 강렬한 퇴근 후 경험 중 하나였다. 회사를 나와 동네 치과에 가고, 임플란트 수술을 받고, 치아 건강은 절대 미루면 안 된다는 사실을 몸으로 배운 날이었다.
